Arizona Summer Reading Program – Arizona PBS

When was the last time your family went to the library? The library is more than just a quiet place filled with books! In fact, it’s a great place to keep your kids busy and entertained during summer vacation.

Arizona State Libraries come together to carry out the same theme reading program across the state. This year the theme is Oceans of Possibilities!

If you walk into a public library in different towns in Arizona, you’ll see that they all have ocean decor throughout – encouraging readers of all ages to spend their summer immersed in a good book!

Start dates and activities may vary, so you should check your local library’s website for details.

How can your children enjoy the library during the summer months?

  1. Reading newspapers. The library encourages children (and even adults!) to keep a journal of what they read. Some libraries even do this through the free READsquared app from Google Play or the App Store. You log in, create an account and can track the minutes and books you have read! It can be fun for the whole family – you can even make it a friendly competition! Many libraries have drawings or awards for some recorded time.
  2. Story time. My kids, ages 3 and 4, love story time during the summer! They sing familiar songs, play instruments, watch puppet shows and, of course, listen to several books read aloud! Often these are also divided into age groups! Check your local library’s website for hours.
  3. Arts and crafts. Public libraries also host crafts and activities for children of all ages. This summer, most will also be centered on the theme of the ocean! Take a calendar on your next visit, so you can plan to attend and keep your kids engaged.
  4. Teen activities. The library also keeps our older children in mind! Game nights, movie nights, entertainment nights and even crafts suitable for this age group! These are just a few examples of what your local library can accommodate.

Plus, if your kids don’t have library cards yet, now would be a great time for them to get one for the first time and check out a book!
