A new year always brings new opportunities, new goals and new ways to enrich your life. Here at the Whitman County Library, we believe there is no better way to ring in the New Year than with your library card.

Library card holders have access to more than 108,000 audiobooks and books, DVDs, music CDs, activity kits, and downloadable audiobooks and e-books. In addition, the Library Quarter provides access to over 20 online databases that cover topics such as genealogy, free periodicals, e-learning skills, consumer reports, Mango languages, world travel and movie streaming.

Whether your resolution is to read more, stay healthy, or learn something new, the library wants to help you along the way.

Is learning a new language on your New Year’s Resolutions list? Mango Languages ​​gives you 24/7 access to over 70 languages ​​from around the world, as well as over 20 English courses. You can access it for free via your laptop, tablet, smartphone or computer with your library card. Classes are tailored to your pace and cover grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, and real-world situations using audio from a native speaker.

LinkedIn Learning is an online educational site that includes over 3,000 courses (and over 130,000 videos) in popular areas such as website design & development, IT, education / instruction, photography, media production and business. Whitman County residents can access LinkedIn Learning content for free with their library card.

The Whitman County Library offers Discover Passes for payment. Each pass comes with an activity backpack containing binoculars, field guides, various interpretive materials, and maps of local county trails and roads. This was made possible through a program called Check out Washington – a collaboration between Washington State Parks and the Washington State Library that allows individuals to visit a state park without paying parking fees.

Outdoor backpacks are also available at checkout in the library as part of the Bonnie Belle collection. The three outdoor themed backpacks, ranging from bird watching to fishing to hiking, have been designed to encourage participation in outdoor activities.

In addition, the library offers two geocaching backpacks. Each backpack contains a Garmin GPS unit, geocaching information, and guides from the Ice Age Floods Institute featuring local landmarks.

The library offers free access to HeritageQuest for your genealogical research. HeritageQuest offers a comprehensive indexed listing of US Federal Census images from 1790 to 1940, as well as information on people and places described in over 28,000 family and local histories.

Whitman Heritage Digital Collections, available on the library’s website, allows residents to research local history. This is a project of the library and local partners, consisting of photographs, documents and artifacts documenting the ancient culture and community life of Whitman County and communities in the Palouse area in the east. from Washington.

Residents who hold a Whitman County Library card can stream over 30,000 films, documentaries, foreign films and TV series with Kanopy. Movies can be streamed from any computer, TV, mobile device or platform by downloading the Kanopy app.

Washington Anytime Library offers more than 59,000 titles available as downloadable eBooks and audiobooks. Using the Libby app, residents can make reservations, checkout, and read or listen to books from their computer, smartphone or tablet using their library card. If a title is not available, call us to make a request.

Residents can also reserve physical library materials through our online card catalog. Plus, check out the new items that have been added to our library, including on-order items. As always, requests can be picked up at any of our 14 branches.
