Skidompha Library’s summer reading program is set to begin on Wednesday, June 1 with activities for youth and adults.
Each year, the Summer Library Collaborative Program selects a nationally unified summer reading theme to promote and provide summer reading materials and ideas to state libraries. The goal is simple: to support literacy when school is out for the summer.
Skidompha joins libraries across the United States in celebrating the 2022 theme: Oceans of Possibility, according to a press release from the Damariscotta-based library.
Kids 12 and under can track their readings to win raffle tickets and prizes all summer long. Every child who signs up gets a free book, and there are five raffle baskets with different ocean themes. An ocean-themed summer lineup will include craft kits, a picture book club, story time, “Mr. Drew and His Animals Too!”, exploring tidal pools with the Chewonki Foundation , art and building classes, and free movie screenings of “The Blue Planet” at the Lincoln Theater.
Teens ages 13-18 will receive a free book and other reading treats when they sign up for the summer reading program. They can track their activities on a bingo sheet and hand them in to win raffle tickets for three prizes – a relaxation bag (a $25 gift card to Barn Door Bakery, an insulated travel mug, Buddha Board and a Burts Bees gift set are some of the prizes), a tech bag (with wireless Bluetooth headphones, a mobile gamepad, LED light strips and a MERGE cube) and an adventure bag (with a check – Midcoast Kayak gift for Muscongus Bay Wildlife Tour for 2, first aid kit, two headlamps and a bottle of Nalgene water and more).
Programming includes planting seeds, making mandala calendars, seashell painting, weekly beach chair reading group with plenty of time to talk books and drink lemonade, weekly hangout with games social with snacks, several art classes, naturalist walks and programming with marine mammals. of Maine.
Adults can take part in a bingo challenge to win entries into a raffle that will take place at the end of the summer – the more bingoes completed, the more entries. Programming includes a monthly ocean-themed virtual book club, a monthly mystery book club offered by Coastal Senior College, bi-weekly genealogy research assistance and a collection of stories, a lecture and a concert on songs of the sea, storytelling events, naturalist walks, programming with Marine Mammals of Maine, a shipyard and lighthouse cruise with the Maine Maritime Museum, and storytelling events.
