As we all settle into Part 2 of Lockdown I’m sure we’re all thinking about Part 1 of Lockdown last spring and what we’re going to do differently this time around. If “read more books” is on your quarantine to-do list, here’s what you need: a brand new online bookstore just for gay readers.
This new store is called Queer Lit and features over 700 LGBTQ + fiction and non-fiction titles. Featuring books from some of the world’s best-known LGBTQ + authors, Queer Lit was created to make LGBTQ + literature accessible to people from all parts of the UK and Ireland.
Matthew Cornford, CEO of Queer Lit, explains what inspired him to start this online store: “Like a lot of people, I love a good book and wanted to explore more queer literature. After walking into a store in Manchester which described itself as “the biggest bookstore in the North”, I was shocked to learn “We don’t have an LGBTQ section”. You will have to go home and search the internet for gay books, then come find it in its appropriate category ”.
Cornford knew that this answer was not adequate, so the idea for Queer Lit was born.
In addition to being a bookstore, Queer Lit was designed as a community space for avid readers, where users can discuss and review the latest books, listen to queer podcasts, and chat with the authors.
“I didn’t want to just start an online bookstore. I wanted to create an immersive experience with everything Queer Lit. Cornford continues: “Even living in Manchester, which is home to a vibrant gay community, there are unfortunately still some people who feel they can’t be open about who they are, or some are still on this journey of discovery. So I wanted to create a welcoming space where people can not only read about issues and characters that reflect their lives and experiences, but discuss them and be inspired. “
Queer Lit is more than just an online bookstore that one can spend hours pursuing or losing pleasantly in other worlds and scholarly discussions. Queer Lit is a safe space for self-discovery and discovering different parts of yourself at the heart of your next book.
Stop by Queer Lit for your next queerlit.co.uk book.
