WARSAW — A reading program is becoming a reality thanks to funding from the TCU Foundation.
According to its website (tcu.net), the TCU Foundation is a non-profit organization created to “support the (Teachers Credit Union) vision of partnering with our communities.” He goes on to say that the foundation supports mentorship opportunities, scholarships, and educational programs through this effort.
Operation Read is living up to these efforts, especially since it has launched a new reading program called Book Boogie.
“Book Boogie is a program to encourage reading for children in a fun and engaging way,” the organization reported.
The program is aimed at students in kindergarten through fifth grade and encourages them to keep track of the reading they have completed. Then two students from each class who have read the most pages will receive prizes each month. In addition, each month a teacher will be selected to receive reading awards.
“During the elementary school’s May awards program, the grand prizes will be awarded to the top two readers and one top teacher, with a total of 98 prizes awarded for the school year,” a representative from the school said. ‘organization. “All children who participate will have the opportunity to accumulate points, so even if they haven’t read the most pages, they are still encouraged to keep reading.”
This year, the program began at North Webster Elementary School.
“(North Webster Elementary School) is scalable for us because we’re beta testing and we can be hands-on,” said DeeAnna Muraski, executive director of Operation Read.
So far, she says, the program has been well received, adding: “I walked down the school corridor where students were queuing and saw four of them reading – it made my day”.
The program will then roll out to other elementary schools each year and will focus on schools in Kosciusko County – elementary schools in Warsaw, Wawasee, Tippecanoe and Pierceton.
