Kansas Reads to Preschoolers is an annual event celebrated each year in November to promote reading, with a focus on the 2-5 year old age group. This year, the Kansas State Library encouraged parents, librarians, and caregivers across the state to read: Grumpy Bird, by Jeremy Tankard.

Thanks to a donation from the Pratt Walmart Supercenter, the Macksville City Library was able to host a very NON-GRUMPY program for sixteen local preschoolers in Miss Carey’s classroom!

After listening to the Grumpy Bird book, the students each colored a wooden door hanger to take home. With new packs of crayons for everyone, kids colored one side that read, “Grumpy Bird Inside!” (Enter at your own risk!). ”Then they turned the hanger over to color the side that said“ Happy Day. ”On the“ Happy ”side, they described the paper in their favorite color and added some pictures of things that make them happy, like flowers, dogs, pizza, smiley faces and more!

Then the pupils explained how to use the door hangers. Despite what parents can bring home, some children reported that they were NEVER cranky! It was difficult for some to make GRUMPY faces (without laughing!), But almost all of them finally made it!

THEN they turned the door hangers over and showed the HAPPY side. It was much easier to get smiles from those smart preschoolers!

A final book was, This is Gus, by Chris Chatterton. This story of a very cranky dog had a daughter who clapped at the end. Each student was able to take home a copy of This is Gus as well as two “Smiles” fruit snacks (one to eat and one to share, just like Gus!).

The program concluded with a discussion of the library’s 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten program and an introduction to the 10 activity bags, available at the cash desk. The kids did a great job putting together the magnetic puzzle.

Please contact the library if you would like to register or find out more about these important ways to promote literacy!
