The Bainbridge Rotary Club met on Tuesday for its regular weekly meeting, with guest speaker of the day Beth Jones, Marketing and Programming Librarian for the Southwest Georgia Regional Library. Jones spoke about the various programs offered and initiatives that will be offered by the library in the future.

“Our big thing is eBooks and audiobooks,” she said. “Once COVID happened and we realized, ‘Oh my God, we have to close our doors,’ there was a great effort to continue to provide resources to everyone in the community through our collection of books. electronic and audio books. “

According to Jones, this has led to an increase of up to 73,000 titles added to the collection.

The library also received grants that enabled it to purchase Chromebooks and Wi-Fi hotspots.

“The only thing we found out during COVID was the students at Bainbridge High School, they have Chromebooks so they could take their virtual classes, but there were a lot of students who didn’t have internet access from their homes. “Jones said. . “These hotspots will be available for students to work from home. “

Jones also discussed various applications the library offers for e-books, including Libby, hoopla, and the eRead Kids digital library (all of which have different terms and restrictions), before discussing upcoming virtual programs, such as Virtual Story time and children’s bedtime stories, as well as “Messages from Santa Claus” for Christmas.

Other projects include “WW2 Oral Histories,” a series of videos available on the Georgia Digital Library; the archives of Bainbridge Army Airfield, available on the Digital Library of Georgia; home access to ancestry.com with a library card; digital newspaper archives; a genealogy room, a cemetery index and directories available at the library; and according to Jones, a funeral index is currently in preparation.
