Kolhapur: For Saroj, widow of ND Patil, only three things mattered in their house. First and foremost, her husband, then her collection of books and the awards and citations he has received. After her disappearance, she now owns her huge collection of books, awards and citations.
“As per her wish, we are going to donate the academically significant books to Shivaji University and the rest to Rajarshi Shahu College in Rayat Shikshan Sanstha. as he is affectionately called, Mai took little interest in the books her husband read.
ND Patil, a graduate in economics and law, was an avid reader and always on the lookout for new developments, especially in the field of economics and sociology. His home in Ruikar Colony had piles of books in every corner, under the study table and even on the bed. The latest hard copy of the Economic Survey of India and new work by Yuval Noah Harari can be found.
ND Patil began his career as a teacher while actively engaged in progressive activism. He led Rayat Shikshan Sanstha for many years. His imposing personality brought him closer to the anti-superstition movement launched by Narendra Dabholar. He was a minister for two years, but was a member of the state legislature for many years.
“Whatever salary he received as a teacher or an MP and even the pension, most of it was spent on buying books. Rayat Shikshan Sanstha has decided to set up a memorial dedicated to his name at Shahu College, where we award the awards, citations, photos for public display,” Mai said.
