MOUNT DESERT — The Mount Desert Island Historical Society, in partnership with the Bass Harbor Memorial Library, is hosting a Spring Book Club Meeting May 16 at 6 p.m. on Zoom to discuss Eleanor Mayo’s “Swan’s Harbour.”
Book Club is a community program open to everyone to come together online to discuss books by MDI authors or with local contexts, using literature as an entry point to learn more about regional history.
Mayo was born and raised in Southwest Harbor. She was the first female board member of Tremont Select, elected shortly after buying property in Bass Harbor in 1946 and building a house from found wood and driftwood with her partner and colleague Ruth Moore. .
Mayo’s 1950 novel Swan’s Harbor is about two brothers who own a business on the waterfront near the sardine factory and the Coast Guard station. A misunderstanding of their past causes the brothers to despise each other, but to stay in business, leading them one way or another even though one of the brothers refuses to talk to the other, choosing to communicate only through handwritten notes.
This book can be borrowed from the Bass Harbor Memorial Library, the Jesup Memorial Library in Bar Harbor, and the Southwest Harbor Library. Additional copies are available by interlibrary loan. The book can be purchased by emailing the Tremont Historical Society at [email protected]
Registration is required at www.mdihistory.org/book-club.
