It may not be officially winter yet, but registrations are already underway for the Washington Carnegie Public Library’s 2022 Adult Winter Reading Program.

Rick Chambon, Coordinator of Adult Services and Outreach, said the theme of the popular reading program, which officially runs from Jan. 3 to Feb. 22, will be “Viva Mexico”.

The readings selected, Chambon said, are different from any others he selected for the programs.

“Conquistador: Hernan Cortes, King Montezuma and the Last Fight of the Aztecs” by Buddy Levy and “The Lacuna” by Barbara Kingsolver

“’Conquistador’ is not a happy story, but I think it’s a story people will enjoy,” Chambon said. “We hear about Montezuma but not a lot from some of the other members of society.”

Levy’s book chronicles the last days of the Aztec Empire and the clash between the cultures of Cortes and Montezuma. It only took Cortes two years to defeat the Aztec nation that once rivaled European cities.

Kingsolver’s book, a historical fiction, follows Harrison Shepherd on his adventures in Mexico where he has a variety of jobs ranging from cooking and shopping to mixing plaster for famous muralist Diego Rivera. Through his passion for Aztec history, he also befriended artist Frida Kahlo and exiled political leader Lev Trotsky. When the United States entered World War II, Shepherd felt the political wind swing him between north and south in a plot that often turned on the unspeakable rift between truth and public presumption.

“As the weather can play a role, we ask for event registration and for a few events this is mandatory,” Chambon said, adding that when participants register for the program, they can also register for the events. associated special events. “We will also have some events offered on Zoom. “

Discussions about the books are scheduled for 6:30 p.m. on January 3 and 10. The opening discussion will focus on “The Gap” with “Conquistador” the following week. Coffee and tea will be served at both events.

On January 11 at 2:30 pm, participants are invited to the library, 300 W. Main St., to watch “Mountain Worlds,” a BBC production of mountains in Mexico.

“Conquistador” will be the topic of discussion again on January 27 at a 2:30 p.m. meeting held in person and via Zoom.

The next morning at 10 a.m. there will be a coffee and a discussion about the book.

“This one will be for ‘The Lacuna’ and we’ll be giving away some tasty treats,” Chambon said.

Participants wishing to learn more about the Yucatan Peninsula will have the opportunity to do so on January 31 at 6.30 p.m. during the broadcast of the BBC’s production “Forests of the Mayans”.

Chambon and chef Jeff Gumbel will present a travelogue on Viva Mexico on February 1.

“This will be a tour of some of the places we’ve visited in Mexico over the years,” Chambon said. “And Chef Jeff will spice up your evening with a delicious dessert. This program will also be offered through Zoom. The deadline to register in person will be January 28.

Learn more about artist Frida Kahlo on February 3 at 2:30 pm during the screening of “Frida” starring Salma Hayek. Popcorn and soft drinks will also be served.

On February 10, the film “Burning North”, which details the Mexican desert, will be screened at 6.30pm.

Julia Roberts and Brad Pitt star in “Mexican” which airs at 2:30 pm on February 17th.

“We will close the evening with a little tasting of hot chocolate, Mexican style,” said Chambon, adding that registration is required before February 18.
